The internet search engine <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/topics\/journalism-news\/labeling-fact-check-articles-google-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently announced<\/a><\/u>\u00a0that it is to launch a fact-checking service on its news pages.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Google is partnering with a number of organizations including the <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/2015\/poynter-names-director-and-editor-for-new-international-fact-checking-network\/374139\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Fact Checking Network<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and Duke University\u2019s Reporters Lab \u00a0to separate fact from fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Promoting the service, Google\u2019s head of new, Richard Gingras said: \u201cIn the seven years since we started labelling types of articles in Google News (e.g., In-Depth, Opinion, Wikipedia), we\u2019ve heard that many readers enjoy having easy access to a diverse range of content types. Earlier this year, we added\u00a0a \u201cLocal Source\u201d Tag to highlight local coverage of major stories. Today, we\u2019re adding another new tag, \u201cFact check,\u201d to help readers find fact checking in large news stories. You\u2019ll see the tagged articles in the expanded story box on new.google.com and in the Google News &amp; Weather iOS and Android\u00a0apps, starting with the U.S. and the U.K.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s fact checking service should give the search engine greater credibility over their social media rivals. According to <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/oct\/13\/google-news-fact-check-trump-clinton-us-election\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a><\/u>, Facebook recently courted controversy after their automated news algorithm started promoting fake news. However, how many of the 18 to 24 year olds who use Facebook as their primary method of engaging with the news will be swayed by \u201cthe truth\u201d remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>The launch of the service comes less than a month away from the US elections and may prove pivotal in a campaign where both candidates have been accused of misrepresenting facts.<\/p>\n<p>It will be really interesting to see how UK publishers engage with the service, particularly with red hot subjects like Brexit and the Marmite wars.<\/p>\n<p>My gut tells me, that while some will embrace the truth and thrive on the added credibility Google\u2019s badge of honour gives them, many others will continue to follow the policy of not letting the truth get in the way of a good story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newspaper publishers may finally have a real reason to fear Google.
