{"id":97432,"date":"2016-12-08T14:00:26","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk?p=97432&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=97432"},"modified":"2017-01-18T16:03:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T16:03:09","slug":"buzzfeed-dont-think-union-representation-is-good-for-employees-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/buzzfeed-dont-think-union-representation-is-good-for-employees-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Buzzfeed don\u2019t think union representation is good for employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Journalists at Buzzfeed are in the process of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/buzzfeed-uk-journalists-make-a-move-towards-union-recognition\/\"><u>forming a Union Chapel<\/u><\/a>\u00a0with around 80 editorial staff in their London office asking for representation under the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the NUJ insist that Buzzfeed\u2019s staff \u201call enjoy working for Buzzfeed UK, and believe in building a sustainable business\u201d, bosses at the online news brand are not happy with the move and want to \u201cspeak directly\u201d to staff who are considering adopting union practices.<\/p>\n<p>Jonah Peretti, Buzzfeed\u2019s co-founder, said in a letter to staff: \u201cIn the past<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/coralewis\/buzzfeed-founder-jonah-peretti-i-dont-think-a-union-is-right?utm_term=.yfn6xwVJr#.kgJoK8aO3\">,<\/a> I\u2019ve said\u00a0I don\u2019t think a union is in the best interests of BuzzFeed or our employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnions represent employees around a rigid skillset that doesn\u2019t reflect the fluid and flexible way we work, they introduce an extra layer of bureaucracy and process, and they unnecessarily divide our teams, limiting the many benefits of everyone being part of a venture backed tech company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome outside activists have criticized my motives or my character but I want all of you to know that my top two priorities are serving 1) the public, and 2) the people who work at BuzzFeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peretti continued: \u201cBefore any decision is made, it is incredibly important to me that I have a direct line of communication with all of you, that I know about any concerns, complaints, or suggestions for improvement you have, and that we can speak openly and directly with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peretti\u2019s comments regarding union representation in a digital start-up environment may be\u00a0 correct. However, Buzzfeed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2016\/04\/buzzfeed-slashes-revenue-forecast-is-this-the-beginning-of-the-end-of-the-millennial-media-bubble\" target=\"_blank\"><u>projected revenues<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of $250 million for 2016, is moving beyond the position of \u201cstart-up\u201d and becoming a staple of the mainstream news environment. With this level of business maturity comes a whole new set of challenges and this includes union representation for their journalists who will now be seeking the same kind of protections as their peers in the traditional news sector.<\/p>\n<p>Is union representation good for Buzzfeed and its employees or will it impact negatively on the everyone within the organisation?
