For example, defamation is defamation regardless of whether words appear in a newspaper, commercial website or personal blog.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/blogger-faces-losing-her-home-after-legal-fight-with-council-costs-her-220000\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Press Gazette<\/u><\/a>, this was one very expensive lesson learnt by Welsh blogger Jacqui Thomson who fell afoul of libel laws in her blogged tussle with Carmarthenshire County Council chief executive Mark James.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Thomson filed a libel lawsuit against James and the council after a claim that she was \u201crunning a campaign of harassment, intimidation and defamation of Council staff and members for some considerable time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>James counter-sued over statements made in a number of Thomson\u2019s blog posts, including one that described James as \u201cPinnochio\u201d and talked about \u201cslush funds\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After losing both a court case and appeal, Thomson now faces legal fees and court expenses in excess of \u00a3220,000 and as a result may lose her house.<\/p>\n<p>The mother-of-four told journalists: \u201c\u201cI was pretty devastated by it all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cHe shouldn\u2019t have said what he said and I feel the judgment was totally wrong. It was a very lengthy judgement and there\u2019s not a lot I can do about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many things about it that were wrong but it\u2019s very difficult to overturn these things. If I was a wealthy person I would have taken it further, I would have gone to the Supreme Court, or Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Carmarthenshire County Council had little to say regarding the court battle, telling journalists: \u201cThe council\u2019s response to this case is well documented and a matter of public record having been discussed at full council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may wish to search through council minutes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carmarthenshire.gov.wales\/home\/council-democracy\/committees-meetings\/agendas-minutes-(archive)\/#.WH4Z-rlBaZd\">here\u00a0<\/a>if you need information\/background.
