How AirportsUK uses Vuelio to ensure the voice of the UK airports sector is heard

Airports are a vital connector for the global marketplace, facilitating essential trade, and supporting jobs across every region. At the heart of this sector sits AirportsUK, the national trade association representing over 50 airports and nearly 100 associate members. Founded in 1934, the organisation serves as the principal body engaging with the UK government, regulatory authorities, and opinion formers to ensure the industry’s voice is heard.

AirportsUK works tirelessly to secure policy outcomes that foster sustainable growth, from navigating the complexities of airspace modernisation, championing decarbonisation initiatives, or influencing wider aviation strategy and planning reform. For a member-led organisation tasked with such high-stakes advocacy, the ability to monitor emerging trends, identify key political allies, and measure the impact of its communications is paramount. To navigate this intricate landscape, the team relies on the Vuelio platform for their public affairs and media operations.

The challenge

For Peter Campbell, Head of Public Affairs and Media at AirportsUK, the core challenge lies in the sheer breadth of the organisation’s mandate:

‘Our overall focus is working with members to identify the key issues that they need us to engage the government on. This includes business rates and wider competitiveness, airspace modernisation and decarbonisation, planning, and wider aviation strategy — including our approaches to expansion and growth.’

To advocate effectively on these fronts, the team needs to stay on top of what’s happening in Westminster and Whitehall, ‘identifying potential allies in Parliament and Whitehall to advocate on behalf of our issues and build relationships through participation in debates, committee and APPG membership, and asking questions.’

Beyond proactive advocacy, the team faces the constant challenge of media management. They must be adept at monitoring the press for coverage of the sector and their own organisation, while simultaneously tracking emerging negative narratives:

‘We need to monitor press and media for coverage of AirportsUK and the wider airport sector, which helps us identify journalists we can build relationships with,’ says Campbell.

‘Crucially, it is also about making us aware of any potential negative stories that might gain coverage so we can respond quickly with our own lines and seek a right to reply.’

As a London-based organisation representing members across Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, the team also needed a solution that would help them traverse differing regulations and policies.

‘It’s about filling gaps in our knowledge, particularly in the devolved administrations, where we — as a London-based organisation but with members in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales — need to be.’

Solution

To tackle these challenges, AirportsUK has integrated the Vuelio platform into the daily workflow of its public affairs and media team. The platform serves as the central hub for their monitoring and relationship-building efforts, providing the insights necessary to move from reactivity to proactive strategy.

‘We make effective use of the various monitoring alerts, especially the media and political updates that let us know what stories are being covered and who in Parliament is commenting,’ Campbell explains. These alerts ensure the team is never caught off guard, allowing them to stay at the forefront of aviation discourse.

The platform’s utility extends beyond simple alerts. When it comes to political engagement, the team relies on Vuelio’s database to refine their approach:

‘We use the online portal to check contact details, information on interests and specialisms, and memberships, and to pull together contact databases,’ Campbell says.

‘It’s really easy to use; it’s straightforward to find and extract the information needed, and the data in it is kept as up-to-date as it is probably possible to keep it.

‘The social media feeds are also helpful for monitoring accounts of key stakeholders, rather than having to pick our way through all the content on websites,’ he notes.

The platform provides the essential reporting functionality required to demonstrate value to members:

‘We use it for creating basic analytics in the form of graphs for reports,’ Campbell explains. ‘These show the impact of the releases and comments that are being put out to media, and the briefings being sent to politicians.’

By using data to show mentions, sentiment, and progress over time, the team can tangibly illustrate their reach and traction, ensuring their advocacy efforts are well-supported by evidence.

Results

The impact of adopting the platform has been transformative for AirportsUK’s day-to-day operations. By leveraging the tool’s real-time monitoring and data-driven insights, Campbell and his team have significantly enhanced their agility and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment.

‘We have been able to increase the speed with which we can respond to comments, enquiries, questions, and upcoming debates, and brief journalists and politicians on relevant priorities,’ Campbell reports. This improved responsiveness has been critical in shaping the narrative around aviation policy.

Perhaps most importantly, the platform has allowed for a much more precise approach to stakeholder management:

‘It has allowed us to target the relevant journalists and politicians more effectively, identifying the right people to contact and tailoring our inputs based on their previous contributions,’ says Campbell.

This targeted strategy is yielding measurable dividends. ‘There has been a rise in the amount of coverage we have received, the contact rates from journalists and politicians, and the numbers of times our content is included in media, debates, and questions asked,’ he adds.

For a trade association where success is measured by the ability to influence policy and amplify the industry’s voice, these results are vital. By providing the clarity and speed required to engage in modern political and media environments, the platform has empowered AirportsUK to secure better outcomes for its members, ensuring the vital UK airport sector continues to thrive in an increasingly complex global economy.
